New Year's World Tour 2009
Facebook Event page: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=52461845151

"the illest dude I have seen live" - Karizma
"the man behind a million great tunes" - Gilles Peterson

To kick of the New Year, MdCL is touring the world performing 18 shows in 14 cities covering 4 continents. Starting on New Year's Eve in San Francisco with Lady Alma and Daz I-Kue (Bugz in the Attic), then shows in the Netherlands fusing his MPC and b-lines with one of Holland's finest big bands and a quick stop in Greece to drop a DJ set, MdCL is taking the beats around the planet. Most of the tour features another of his favorite vocals - the UK's Vanessa Freeman (Azymuth, 4Hero, Bugz in the Attic): from Japan, to NZ, throughout Australia - where they'll perform at the Sydney Festival supporting another UK homegirl, Alice Russell, as well as in Melbourne partying with Norman Jay and the Playground Weekender alongside The Streets, Jose Gonzalez and plenty more. Mid February, US audiences will get to witness the MdCL-Vanessa Freeman tag team combo for the very first time coast to coast with the tour wrap show and party in NYC alongside special guest DJ Karizma.

Opportunity for San Diego, CA Broken Beat DJs

Hi,

I go to school at the University of California, San Diego. The campus radio station has begun hosting monthly dance parties at the new nightclub on campus called the Loft, and I'm looking for a DJ in or around San Diego who wants to get some attention and who can dj broken beats and house. Stuff like Bugz in the Attic, Vikter Duplaix, Reel People, Da Lata, or anything else between 120-130bpm that has some soul and makes you want to walk your body. The event itself is free, and we can't pay you, but at the last event there were about 30-40 people, and the station did a bad job of advertising, so you can expect a full house this time around. Also, I plan on having a bunch of San Diego's finest house dancers there to throw down, so I hope that's a plus. Please get back to me soon, as the next party is Dec. 5. Peace!

Born and raised in Paris, Gregory Ogouz - aka Monsieur GREG – defines the meaning of versatility.
Beginning in the world of plastic arts, he then went on to learning how to play a wide array of traditional and ethnic instruments such as violin, keys, drums, bass, Kora, talking drum, etc.
A true music lover, he draws his inspiration from a slew of musical genres and artists: jazz, from Sarah Vaughan to Herbie Hancock; reggae, from Israel Vibration to Capleton; electronic music, from Derrick May to Matthew Herbert; hip-hop, from De La Soul to Dizzee Rascal.
As the West London sound swept thru the streets of Paris a few years back, Monsieur GREG had finally discovered a genre of music where he can fully hone in on his skills in producing truly versatile music.

Got it over the weekend and am about to put it on the ipod so I can digest it properly during the week.

Have to say though that on first listen though , I'm a little underwhelmed.

Greetings All,

Well we finally got another spot to present something different from the current nightlife scene here in provincial little Santa Cruz. I am hoping you all can make it out to support this beautiful new space, have a dance, and share some drinks with friends. Feel free to check out my sites to see the flyer I made, or add me as a friend from the myspace link given. So here goes the official invite....

Aaron Cohick (aka Dj ABC) and the scunderground presents:

"Nu-jive" at the Cardiff Lounge, 529 Seabright Ave., Santa Cruz, Cali.

Second Saturdays of every month starting this Saturday night, March 11th, 2006.

Continuing on second Saturdays: April 8th, May 13th, June 10th, ect.

Dj ABC (scunderground) and guests will spin a frenzy of freakified funk on the floor. So get ready for Broken-beats, bossa breaks, soulful/funked up housin', and eclectic afro-electronica.

Free to all those 21+ who have soul.
About King Britt
Rarely will you find a talent whose vision supersedes the boundaries of genre, until you have met King Britt. This Philadelphia native has found a way to escape the boundaries of a single category of music by expressing his creations through deep house, hip-hop, broken beat, nu-jazz, funk and afro-tech.

As a member of Digable Planets and as an artist on San Francisco's own OM Records label, and having worked with artists such as Questlove from the Roots, Ursula Rucker, Macy Gray, Femi Kuti, and others, King Britt's new style fuses influences from various music genres and comes full circle with a new interpretation of all that he has experienced..

"Tila Tila" with new artists this Saturday.

Triptych Bistro Presents......

"TilaTila" on Saturday nights!
(That's Swahili for well mixed...)

The scunderground collective is manifesting a more
eclectic mix to the bay area cultural scene. This
will include dj'ing with an emphasis on challenging
the genre specific, the latest in visual art, and
amazing, progressive food.

It's all going down every Saturday night at a fairly
new bistro in the city of SF called "Triptych". You
can check out this beautiful indoor/outdoor space at
their website here:

www.triptychsf.com/

So we have myself, Dj ABC on the dub plates, spinning
the vinyl in the styles of soul, funk, downtempo,
instrumental hip-hop, dub, broken-beat, acid-jazz,
afro beat, deep house, ambient, and a few other
experimental surprises. Always featuring unique tracks only
to be heard at Triptych.

And in the kitchen we have another scunderground
member, Chef Craig Howell, spinning an eclectic mix of
California cuisine, Mediterranean, French, and other
spontaneousness on the heated plates. If you've never
tasted his mix before, and you love progressive
cooking, he will blow you away. The folks who have
made it up to SF so far were well rewarded by a
quality of culinary skills you will be hard pressed to find
in the bay area.

And finally, spinning the images on the walls we
have two brand new artists....

JENNALEX, aka Jennifer Alexander, is an artist living
and working in San Francisco. Originally from the
sandhills of North Carolina, she spent her childhood
wandering through pine forests along the Cape Fear
River, staring at the sun out of the window of her
classroom, and watching the grass grow threw cracks in
the pavement. These early influences still persist in
her work to this day as evidenced in her fascination
with nature, the human impact on it, and the way light
works with different elements. She continued her
education at the North Carolina School of the Arts,
where she focused her attention on Scene Design for
Theatre, and continued to develop an interest in
written and spoken words. After she received her BFA,
she packed all her belongings in a covered wagon
(actually a white pickup truck with a camper shell)
and headed west to California, where she continued
honing her craft through years of figure drawing and
various digital explorations, until she became
fascinated with plastic and began combining epoxy
resin castings with light. Her passion for poetry,
nature, philosophy and music are main influences in
her work. Recently, she developed a strong interest in
drawing portraits. Focusing her eye on humanity and
drawing out the deeper subconscious levels of her
subjects are what drive her in this process. Her muse
has led her to explore many different mediums, from
ink, watercolor, and pastels, to video, mobiles,
converted chainsaws, and epoxy resin. www.jennalex.com

and Randy Clark,

"I began shooting photos as a boy in the 1960s. In
1966 my father (an excellent photographer, himself)
gave me a 35mm single-lens reflex camera, and I have
used that medium ever since, with the addition of a
digital camera in 2002.

In high school, I studied composition, print-making,
and photo essays with Tim Wilbers, who now teaches
photography and animation at the University of Dayton,
Ohio. That is the extent of my formal training so far,
though I've learned much from other photographers—both
their pictures and their writings.

People, objects, scenery: any of these can excite me
by their variety, by the mystery of this world, and by
the things that light can do. I will be exhibiting 18
prints of my photos this month of December"
www.randyclarkphoto.com

So there you have it. If you like to eat amazing food,
while listening to smooth eclectic beats, and viewing
the interesting visual interpretations of our
beautiful planet, this is the night for you!

Here are the venue details:

When?

Saturday nights.
a 10% discount off your bill.)

Art opening party at Triptych this Thursday night.

Progressive Fine Art, Food, Wine, and Music this
Thursday night, December the 1st...

This opening party will present two new artists to the
Triptych gallery space.

Wine Bar featuring Drew of Andrew Lane Wines.
Complimentary Appetizers first hour by our amazing
Chef Craig Howell..
Back beats and mood guidance by Dj ABC
(scunderground).

Come join us for a cultural experience that massages
all the senses.

Here are the venue details:

Greetings All,

Since we have officially become a weekly event we
decided that it would be appropriate to give our
Saturday nights offering an original name.

So here it is:

Triptych Bistro Presents......

"TilaTila" on Saturday nights!
(That's Swahili for well mixed...)

The scunderground collective is manifesting a more
eclectic mix to the bay area cultural scene. This
will include dj'ing with an emphasis on challenging
the genre specific, the latest in visual art, and
amazing, progressive food.

It's all going down every Saturday night at a fairly
new bistro in the city of SF called "Triptych". You
can check out this beautiful indoor/outdoor space at
their website here:

www.triptychsf.com/

So we have myself, Dj ABC on the dub plates, spinning
the vinyl in the styles of soul, funk, downtempo,
instrumental hip-hop, dub, broken-beat, acid-jazz,
afro beat, deep house, ambient, and a few other
experimental surprises. Always featuring artists only
to be heard at Triptych.

The folks who have
made it up to SF so far were well rewarded by a
quality of culinary skills you will not find in Santa
Cruz.

And finally now spinning the images on the walls we
have a brand new artist. Blake Tucker is a primarily
landscape photographer who creates unique,
hand-crafted original artwork from his own digitally
manipulated photography. They are presented on canvas
like traditional paintings and will delight your
visual senses. Works range from 8" x 10" to large 44"
by 60". Check out his website at www.blaketucker.com.

So there you have it. If you like to eat amazing food,
while listening to smooth eclectic beats, and viewing
the interesting visual interpretations of our
beautiful planet, this is the night for you!

Here are the venue details:

When?

Dinner Time
Saturday
6:00pm - 10:00pm
Music will be from about 7 pm until 11 pm.
(mention scunderground between 6pm and 8pm and receive

"Something Else" for dinner this Saturday night?

Greetings All,

Well summer is finally over and the craziness that ensued has settled a bit. So now the scunderground collective finally has some time to once again attempt to bring a more eclectic mix to the bay area dj music scene. But this time we are also going to bring other elements in the mix, that being interesting visual art, and amazing, progressive food.

It's all going down this Saturday night at a fairly new venue in the city of SF called "Triptych". You can check out this beautiful space at their website here:

www.triptychsf.com/

So we have myself, Dj ABC on the dub plates, spinning the licorice pizza in the styles of soul, funk, downtempo, instrumental hip-hop, dub, broken-beat, acid-jazz, afro beat, deep sexy house, micro house, and a few other surprises.

And in the kitchen we have another scunderground member, Chef Craig Howell, spinning an eclectic mix of California cuisine, Mediterranean, French, and other spontaneousness on the heated plates. If you've never tasted his mix before, and you love progressive cooking, he wil blow you away. All the food is hand picked by him and fresh as the sea breeze on a warm spring day. ;)

And finally spinning the images on the walls we have artist David W. Dieter.

David W. Dieter's paintings and drawings are inspired
by dance and music. He is influenced by the human form
in classical and contemporary dance and its
relationship to its environment. He draws inspiration
from local and international dancers in their natural
and unnatural settings. David's art is mixed media
utilizing acrylics, pastels and collage in his
painting and drawings while exploring form, movement,
emotion and the relationship of dancers to each other
and their settings. He combines traditional dance with
new forms creating a hybrid style.

So there you have it, if you like to eat good food, while listening to smooth eclectic beats, while viewing the interesting visual interpretations of this movement this is the night for you!

Here are the venue details:

When?

Dinner Time
Saturday
6:00pm - 10:00pm
Music will be from about 7:30 till 11 pm.

Contact Info for Triptych
Restaurant: 415.703.0557

Address
1155 Folsom St (between 7th and 8th)
San Francisco, CA 94103

Hope to see you out there, Peace, Aaron (aka Dj ABC)

p.s. Sorry it's not in Santa Cruz for all you scunderground locals, but I currently have no options for an event of this type. But if you make the drive and come say hi, I will see if Craig can do something special for you. ;) Right Craig? hehe....

"Something Else" for dinner before Gilles Peterson?

Greetings Again,

Gilles Peterson from the BBC is in SF this Saturday
night. He is performing with some great live acts, and
a amazing local dj support from the crew at Massive
Selector. But rather than repeat all the bio's just go
to their main site to check it all out:

www.massiveselector.com

If you like your broken-hop beats on the jazz tip,
DON'T MISS THIS SHOW. I talked to one of the promoters
yesterday and they are saying that tickets are moving
like crazy, so it may sell out...

On a similar musical note we served up some serious
jazzadelic inspired food, art, and beats at Tryptich
last Saturday. It went smooothly enough that the owner
wants to make it a regular happening!

Thanks to my sister Michelle, Darrell, and Stephon for
supporting with some friendly faces.

So we're back serving "Something Else" for dinner this
Saturday night at a colorful new venue in the city of
SF called "Triptych". It was also recently voted as
having the best "disco bathroom" in the city, so you
don't want to miss that. ;)

You can check out this beautiful indoor/outdoor space
at their website here:

www.triptychsf.com/

It's only a short distance to Gille's party, and a
great way to relax and have some groovy grub before
you go, go, go.

We have myself again, Dj ABC on the dub plates,
spinning the vinyls in the styles of soul, funk,
downtempo, instrumental hip-hop, dub, broken-beat,
acid-jazz, afro beat, deep sexy house, ambience, and a
few other surprises.

And in the kitchen we have another scunderground
member, Chef Craig Howell, spinning an eclectic mix of
California cuisine, Mediterranean, French, and other
spontaneousness on the heated plates. If you've never
cooking, he wil blow you away. All the food is hand
picked by him and fresh as the sea breeze on a warm
spring day. ;) Also the wine and import beer list is
not to be missed!

And finally spinning the images on the walls we have
artist David W. Dieter.

David W. Dieter's paintings and drawings are inspired
by dance and music. He is influenced by the human form
in classical and contemporary dance and its
relationship to its environment. He draws inspiration
from local and international dancers in their natural
and unnatural settings. David's art is mixed media
utilizing acrylics, pastels and collage in his
painting and drawings while exploring form, movement,

ABOUT GILLES PETERSON

The word “DJ” takes on ever broader meaning. At its root, it still boils down to a disk jockey who spins vinyl for a living. But under the DJ rubric are radio DJs, club DJs who beat-match tracks, as well as “turntablists” who scratch. Many DJs are also creators who DJ to supplement their livelihoods and get their tracks out to audiences, while others take on roles as tastemakers, influencing the public through compilations and record labels.

English DJ Gilles Peterson is perhaps the ultimate _expression of the latter style of DJ. From his early days as a club and pirate radio DJ through his more recent incarnations as label boss and BBC radio host, Peterson has shaped tastes through an untiring crusade to spread the side of the dance music spectrum occupied by jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop, Latin and house music.

"One of the most important tastemakers in music this decade" according to MIXMAG

"The man, the myth, the legend ... the incredible selections of arguably one of the most influential DJs of our time." - Miles Ahead

ABOUT DWELE

Neo-soul singer/songwriter/producer Dwele grew up on Detroit's west side, listening to soul music from Motown visionaries Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye as well as jazz on the radio. Born Andwele Gardner, he began writing songs at the age of ten, after his father was murdered outside his home, and attended Cody High in Detroit. Dwele spent a year studying music at Wayne State but then opted for an informal education, making music at his home while living in Dearborn and working for AAA. His demo tape, 1998's The Rize, made waves around the Motor City, and he spent time collaborating with Detroit hip-hop group Slum Village and Philadelphia rapper Bahamadia. Signed to Virgin on the strength of his songwriting and performance skills, Dwele released Subject in mid-2003 and cemented his appeal with European audiences (he was a favorite on Gilles Peterson's influential Radio 1 program) with a tour that summer. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
Los Angeles-based septet, The Rebirth, offers its long anticipated release, This Journey In, to fans on Kajmere Sound/KSD Music in spring 2005. In this compelling new 11-track album recorded in the band’s hometown, The Rebirth matches its musical vitality with a gift for lucid poetry and songwriting, creating a rich sound built on an organic blend of new and traditional soul, hip-hop, jazz, and funk. These elements make the group’s music both highly progressive and a throwback to the classic soul bands: Earth, Wind & Fire, Ramp, Pleasure, Rotary Connection, Side Effect and Roy Ayers.

Bio:

Respected and emulated New York-based producer, DJ, and label chief Osunlade grew up in a musical environment; as a youngster, he took piano lessons and sang in his church's choir. At the age of 17, he joined the cast of the popular children's show Sesame Street as a presenter. He later produced music for the program. During the late ‘80s, he started working as a producer and session hand; since starting out, he has leant his talents to records by Musiq, Patti LaBelle, Najee, India Arie and Eric Benet. In 1999, Osunlade established the Yoruba label and began releasing deep house productions of his own while cultivating new artists. For his first album, 2001's Paradigm, the producer hooked up with the U.K.'s Soul Jazz label, which released the excellent LP and increased his profile significantly as a result. Easily one of the most gifted producers of soul/funk-influenced deep house, Osunlade – an ordained priest in the African religion of Ifa – graces everything he touches with spiritual, uplifting vibes. Offering, a mix album released by R2, came out in 2002.

This is the first new release by Great Britain's Soul Jazz label — widely known for its dynamite reissues of everything from killer Nuyorican soul to New Orleans funk to funky and militant jazz — in years. This debut album by a New York-based house artist comes as a surprise. But it's a welcome one. Osunlade drenches his house in Brazilian, funk, and Latin colors, blending it all into a thoroughly modern dancefloor music that is as compelling to the ears as it is motivating to the booty. The singles from the set include "Blackman," a poetic move toward jazzy house with sampled chords from Bobby Konders' "The Poem." It's a late-night groove, laid-back but insistent, with a rap about Osunlade's upbringing and his spiritual beliefs. It's a kind of housed-out manifesto of positive Afrocentrism. Also notable is the traditional Brazilian tune "Oxissi de Focha Branca," with its drum chants and a call and response rhythm that retains its field recording primitivism long after the house beats kick in. The set closes with "The Deep," a driving house rhythm set against a rolling, one-note bassline interspersed with a two-chord, three-sequence vamp kissed by a harmonica sample in the groove. The harmonica is the lead "melodic" instrument (it's a Charlie Musselwhite sample), though it's just riffing in the cut and carrying the track through its intervals. This is an auspicious debut by a young cat who has brought something new and very different to the world from the house scene in New York.

Pushin On is the second album from Quantic’s live band Quantic Soul Orchestra and the first to be domestically released on Ubiquity. It follows hot on the heels of the widely acclaimed Quantic album Mishaps Happening.

"Putting something back" is Will Holland’s reason for starting The Quantic Soul Orchestra. After releasing electronic/studio-based albums as Quantic he wanted to work on a strictly live project, to “put the funk back in it”, and to pay homage to a genre that continues to heavily influence his releases. QSO is his chance to record and produce an album with creative and like minded musicians. The Orchestra make killer funk with enough bottom-end to burn any dance floor, and the album features several tracks with the super powerful vocals of Alice Russell. In the USA Quantic’s Mishaps Happening album ended up in many “Best of” lists for 2004, tracks were featured on CSI Miami, the Pepsi iTunes ad campaign (during Super Bowl), and was given thumbs up by everyone from Vibe to XLR8R. QSO have played The Big Chill, Glastonbury, Isle of Wight, and many other festivals in Europe - Quantic Soul Orchestra recently performed in Toronto at Harbourfront's Beats, Breaks and Culture Festival.

Event: Slung Over & Snug Over
Venue: Mighty
DJs: Moonstar, Sake 1, Joe Quixx, Proof, Yoshito, Tokyo Component, Kento
Music: hip-hop, house, broken beat, world beat
Cover: $5 befor 11:30pm This cool party with the weird name is probably some inside joke between DJ Hakobo and his fiancée, Nhu. The two are getting married the next day so this hip-hop, broken beat and Brazil-beat celebration is bound to be the spot for Friday. It's only $5 before 11:30pm and you are actually getting a bonus - 2 parties in 1! The highlight of the first party is Moonstar of Compost Records fame. In the hip-hop room is Joe Quixx who started the Wake Up Show w/Sway of MTV & Tech - it's the longest lasting/most popular hip-hop radio show of all time. Don't be late!

check out the "jazz beyond" lineup: http://www.sanjosejazz.org/schedule.html#

fri: jason moran & the bandwagon and kosmic renaissance (featuring triber sameer gupta on tabla/drums) stand out.

sat: the bad plus (i'm not crazy about their album, but it's FREE) and MARK DE CLIVE-LOWE in his only u.s. performance w/band (he's been dj'ing everywhere else--can you tell i like him?)

the openers on both days also look good, but i think they're local folks...

2. how many of you would download the show if i put the set on a site?

who blends a mix of dub, hip-hop, soul, funk, latin,
jazz, afro, bossa, house, electro and broken beats. He
has been on the air at KUSF for over 10 years,
producing Beatsauce on 90.3fm. Dubtronic Science is
his next step in production and live music. J-BOOGIE's
DUBTRONIC SCIENCE blends an organic fusion of
musicians and the dj, mixing turntable beats with live
percussion, sitar, flute, sax, vocals, and other live
elements in a constantly evolving improvisation. The
sounds of Dubtronic Science have been featured at The
Fillmore, The Justice League, DNA Lounge, Elbo Room,
111 Minna, Mezzanine, Boulder Theatre, The Crystal
Ballroom, Hollywood Athletic Club, Root Down, Amoeba
Records, and Fais Do Do in Los Angeles. They have also
toured with OM performing live in Denver, Portland,
Seatlle, San Diego, Santa Fe, Austin, and New York.
J-Boogie's Dubtronic Science full-length album is
available on OM Records and features Goapele, Gina
Rene, Omega, People Under The Stairs, and more. You
can also hear music featured on Ubiquity Recordings,
Future Primitive Sounds, BSI Records, plus remixes of
Mark Farina, Soulstice, and Romanowski.

Originally a native of Portland, OR, Justin Boland
(aka J-Boogie) relocated to San Francisco, CA, and
founded the Dubtronic Science collective. Originally
the name of his radio show, the concept expanded into
the clubs. Dubtronic combines the soul of world music,
hip-hop, broken beat, and deep house in a live
improvisational setting. Their debut release was
issued by OM Records in 2003.

A rich blend of hip-hop, broken beat, dub, and deep
house infects this debut release from J Boogie and his
Dubtronic Science collective. As can be immediately
discerned from the package itself, Dubtronic's whole
aesthetic focuses on a warmth otherwise missing from
the majority of downtempo records. Similar in
diversity to Recloose, the collective gets it right
from start to finish. An impressive debut from these
West Coast staples and a sure sign of promising things
in the future.

ok, i'm sure this has probably been thrown out there before, but i'm'a do it again...

who produces among our ranks? doesn't matter what you produce--please mention it though. if there's someway/where we can hear it, please clue us in (websites, etc.)

i'll go first:
http://www.myspace.com/djtbird (house, downtempo, d&b)
http://waxdj.com/djs/313 (more house, more downtempo, bit o' tabla-tronic garrige...)

oddly, i've done broken beat REMIXES i'm "over the moon about," but i don't have any original stuff in that vibe i'm happy with yet.

Proposal to the west coast headz and beyond(UNIFY!)

So I have this Grand vision of forming a West coast broken beat tour syndicate/circuit, pooling our connections as a community so we can bring more top notch broken beat artists out to the West Coast on a regular basis and amplify the scene. Just think how many artists would be attracted to say a 10 date west coast tour totally locked down solid by an interconnected community of headz all looking out for the global family? I know there are a lot of crews in motion making stuff happen already. Why not collectivize our circuit a bit and open the doors for some heavy weights to come on through? I know Sun tzu sounds in Seattle(www.suntzusound.com) has it going on, and from what I hear the Proper crew in LA does as well(www.properla.com). T-bird always seems to have something going on as well. Whats up in SF these days? Also I know Sun tzu and Streets radio do some nice online radio, which is another way to potentially feature and break new artists. I know a great booking agency that works with some of the sickest funky live improv/electronic acts in the world, as well as a ton of party throwers, some amazing after hours spots, several big time festival organizers, and several well established dj crews and club nights always looking for the next shit. There are some really tight event crews in Eugene and Ashland I know as well. Not to mention the joint where I spin that is getting ready to expand into one of the biggest spaces in Portland. Now some of the above connections are not fully initiated bb headz, BUT they all love dancing, discovering new sounds, funky music of any sort, and artists who are breaking the mold. Its all really great people who genuinely love music and have open minds. I feel the time has come to not only unify our own circuit a bit, but maybe even to start to consciously introduce this music to other sub cultures/scenes that might be ready to hear it. People are rapidly getting bored with the same old shit and they are looking for the next level. If we start bringing in the cream of the crop up and down the coast on a regular basis it could have some beautiful repercussions. Maybe even create an event or two designed to cross polinate the sub scenes. I have seen such strategies work magic in Portland and Seattle. So this post is an invitation for all of you to dream this dream with me and see what we as a collective could create. Any one else share this dream or want to explore possible ways to hook this up? What kind of resources do we as a community have? Is anyone willing to help promote bb events in their hood? Does any one have any other creative ideas to add to this?

What I would propose is that we, as a community, loosely determine what we can offer as a tour circuit, in terms of gigs(including established club nights, parties, and festivals), audience exposure, $, and promotional efforts. Once we have developed some clarity on this, we could then approach some major artists and see if they might want to take us up on what we have to offer. I think with a bit of effort, communication, and collective ambition we could make the West Coast a place world class broken beat artists would flock to. Does anyone else share this vision?

individuals with a shared, eclectic and passionate
interest in soulful music of all genres. A chance
meeting in the mid nineties at a now abandoned London
club started a musical conversation which has
ultimately grown from us being DJ's, record collectors
and 'part time' musicians (and a few other things
in-between) to a fully formed production outfit.

Since then we've had the privilege (sometimes), ahem..
to work with some of the best labels and artists on
the underground and commercial black music scene
across a variety of musical styles encompassing Jazz,
Soul, Hip Hop, House, RnB and Broken Beat.

We also collaborate with talented and respected
musicians, bringing a live aspect to our productions,
this sets the tone for the Yam Who? sound and the way
in which we work. Right now we are busy in the studio
working on our own material as well as re-mixing for
some new and exciting artists.

Since we started out we've had a lot of encouragement
from like minded people in the industry and the
general public. We'd just like to say a big thanks and
respect to all who have supported us so far. You know
who you are.

“The finest cover versions on the planet ”

“This annual series of transformed vintage soul,
reggae and R&B has become a classic ”
XLR8R

"The quality is so high!"
RONI SIZE

"This great series just keeps on getting better and
better... harder hitting than even the excellent
previous volumes, and in a mode that goes way past the
gimmick of a "covers only" album."
DUSTYGROOVE

Stay tuned for details on the release of our most
anticipated Rewind! volume yet!

SUNDAY (1/30):
THE REBIRTH @ BOOM BOOM ROOM (SAN FRANCISCO)

The Rebirth (DEBUT LIVE SHOW IN SAN FRANCISCO!)
With Special Guests: J-Boogie and Sake 1

@ The Boom Boom Room
1601 Fillmore at Geary
San Francisco, CA 94115
21yrs. $8.
www.boomboomblues.com

The Rebirth bring their organic blend of new and
traditional Soul, Jazz, Hip Hop and Funk to San
Francisco for the first time. In this day of solo
artistry, what distinguishes The Rebirth from most is
their returned emphasis on the true "soul band".
Groups such as Earth, Wind & Fire, Ramp, Pleasure,
Rotary Connection, Side Effect and Roy Ayers have
served as models to the re-introduction of this
forgotten sound. But make no mistake The Rebirth can
not be dismissed as a retro band. They pay special
attention to everything that makes a song find it's
own greatness, new or old. The first single "This
Journey In" from their upcoming album has made a huge
impact in Germany, England, Japan and America. DJs,
tastemakers, compilers, Internet radio, information
and retail sites have helped make The Rebirth one of
the most anticipated releases of 2005. J-Boogie and
Sake 1 will surely turn this into a debut soul party
to remember!

wicked live Ayro set and more

Has anyone checked out Steph99's site out yet? It's www.beleza-music.org. LOTS of cool stuff on there. She has some tight mixes, really insightful writing and the most slamming live Ayro set I have heard on the web. For anyone who has not seen him play, all of that is done LIVE with some keyboards and an MPC(which he totally MACKS). Its ridiculous. He is a funky army of one armed to the teeth with rhythm, vibe, and Soul. We got to bring this cat out to the west coast sometime. I can hook up some Portland and Seattle action for sure, and I know some really solid promoters/bookers, party throwers(a great crew from Eugene), and even some large festival organizers as well. Does anyone have any strong Cali connections? Who are the peeps in your neighborhood who might? Enquiring minds want to know. Also big thanks to Steph for really doing her part to elevate the scene!

I have this Grand vision of forming a West coast tour syndicate, pooling our connections as a community so we can bring more top notch artists out to the West Coast on a regular basis and amplify the scene. Just think how many artists would be attracted to say a 10 date west coast tour totally locked down solid by an interconnected community of heads all looking out for the global family? I know sun tzu sounds in Seattle has it going on, as does the proper crew in LA. T-bird always seems to have something going on. Also I know sun tzu and streets radio broadcast some

Bedroom Sessions Cancelled by Owner.

If you were planning to come the Bedroom Sessions
tonight at the Coastline Brewery in Capitola please
note that it has been cancelled.

After I spent over a week distributing flyers,
contacting people via email, telephone, and in person,
the owner (James) decided to call and leave a message
on my voicemail after 10pm last night and tell me he
is cancelling our event AGAIN to accommodate a private
party at his venue.

He also has not payed myself or Dj Wyze_1, aka
Joaquin, in over a month for 3 other events we held at
his venue for a small fee. Furthermore personal
equipment that I lent to his venue was stolen and
James has yet to reimburse me or replace that
equipment as promised.

This is not a smear campaign but I would like other
performers and artists to know how these people do
business at the Coastline Brewery, and to be warned
ahead of time so you will not get the same treatment.

I am dedicated to continuing my concept of providing a
space for unknown local dj's and performers to play
out in Santa Cruz, so any suggestions on a possible
new venue would be appreciated.

As for tonight I would suggest going to support the
final tour of Dubtribe at the Vet's Hall, or if that
isn't your thing you can head down to the Catalyst and
get into the Freakout mode.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused, and
if you have any questions or thoughts please contact
me at: abrintonc@yahoo.com or (831)459-8848.

Peace, Aaron

We're baaaackkk.......
calling all music heads, good people, and
unknown dj's, we are back on this Saturday night the
23rd.

Head on down to the Coastline lounge at 910 41st ave.
in Capitola, (near Santa Cruz, CA) after 8pm.

Relax and ask about the drink specials before 10pm.
Have an organic beer or glass of wine with some
friends on the couch, and just added this week some
tasty appetizers as well.

Chill out to the unique electronic soulful dance space
created by dj ABC, and his
mystery guests. Broken-beat, Dub, Nu-jazz,
drum-n-space, ambient-house, deep-house, downtempo,
soul, trip-hop, acid-jazz, funk, latin-groove, ect.,
ect....

Our mystery guest this Saturday may be "Dj Wyze_1" aka
Joaquin. Joaquin cut his teeth playing a mixture of
breaks, hip-hop, downtempo, acid jazz, and deep latin
flavored house for 88.1 KZSC back in the mid 1990's.
He has been honing his skills for the last two years
playing events for the scunderground wharehouse
parties, RXFX events in Santa Cruz, and plenty of
backyard parties all over the county. He also is a
regular guest on 90.9 KHDC Wednesday nights for the
broken beat downtempo show. If you like your beats
abstract and "internacional", he is your man.

It's chill, it's free, and it's a community thing.

Peace, Aaron

If anyone has not heard the Bugz are doing a stop in Seattle friday(10-15), and will be playing at a really fat party(free and with free food) south of downtown at the western bridge, 1421 4th ave south. Don't know if we have anyone from that area on the tribe here but I figured people would want to know.

So I am hopping down to SF for the love parade (www.loveparadesf.org) and I was just wondering if anyone knows of anything happening the week of 10/2 to 10/10 that might be worth checking out. Also whats the best record stores down that way(aside from amoeba)? Any tips would be really appreciated.

PRESS RELEASE

Illvibe brings DJ Mitsu from Japan

----------------------------------
Illvibe Collective presents...
DJ Mitsu the Beats
Thursday, October 7th
@ Aqualounge(323 W. Girard Ave.
10pm
$5 cover
-----------------------------------

On Thursday October 7th at the Aqualounge, the Illvibe Collective will be bringing one of hiphop's newest international sensations, DJ Mitsu the Beats from Japan.

In 2003, DJ Mitsu the Beats released his first, self-produced solo album New Awakening (Planetgroove), including fine cameos with artists from various places around the globe. The album showcases collaborations with Dwele, Little Brother, K-Otix, Lady Alma, Rich Medina, Mark de Clive Lowe, and many others. With the release of his first album, not to mention, the remix albums that followed, he has taken beat producing to higher levels, adjusting his sound scope for influences from all types of music. Mitsu delivers a vast range of musical genres, spanning from jazzy-soulful hip hop to broken beat to house and back to hip hop. He has found ways to bring these different genre¹s together creating a very diverse repetoire that is certainly unique and one of a kind.

Mitsu will be on the wheels playing soulful hiphop, head nod beats, and jazzy grooves. The Djs of the Illvibe Collective will be in the house providing positive vibes and an opening set of funky beats.

Any peeps on this list hitting the burn? If so I was wondering if anyone is A)spinning any music anywhere, b)knows any DJ's/camps where bb will be going down, or c)would be interested in maybe setting up a night where we could converge and throw down. I am camping at this crazy ass village called Woonami with hundreds of zany freaks and we will definitly be spinning lots of music of all kinds EXCEPT trance(Our camp tends to be a trance free zone). I think I am one of the few broken beat DJ's(one other cat has a bunch of smokin' nu jazz stuff) and then we have some sick breaks and house DJ's. I also like to mix in conscious hip hop and old school funk as well. I was thinking maybe if we could get some heads over to our stage some time we could really get things poppin off buck wild. If anyone might want to spin thats definitly a possibility as well. Anyone interested?

Apparently it is a Madlib alias that will be put out by Stones Throw. From what I've downloaded, I am really happy. There is no one trying to rhyme or sing on any of it which really lets the music speak for itself for once.

I've been picking up tracks on...Goya Music, Visions, Black, Bitasweet etc... Any good suggestions on labels or artists to keep an eye out for? Consistent good releases and the like...? Always want to expand the horizons...

I was just wondering if anyone on this list makes there own music and if so if there are any on line ways of checking it out for a listen. The other thing I was wondering is if anyone has any local up and coming producers/groups/DJ's that are worth mentioning so we can keep our ears peeled for them. As for the Northwest, the suntzu sound DJ's up in Seattle are the most focused crew I have come across(I hear them get props regularly on Benji B's show). Currently though they are not producing as far as I know. They have brought all kinds of crazy people(bugz, jazzanova, etc) to future soul, a night they had that went for about a year and just ended recently. I myself am working on some tracks now that I got my MPC and I will keep yall up as things develop. I previously did a full length CD that is more on the funk/jazz/soul/ethno rock trip that turned out pretty nice. Rhythmically though, the next one will be on a whole new level. Whats anybody else doing?

Hello,

As the former moderator of this tribe, I would suggest that everyone join

http://www.tribe.net/tribe/servlet/template/pub,TribeCard.vm/tribeName/touwatchdog

as about 20 or 30 of us were, we feel, unfairly terminated from service without warning. This tribe is now unmoderated because my old account is no more.

Thanks for listening,
where's the scene in your town?

i read the interviews in grand slam w/seiji & i.g. culture referred to by sean. and there was a question about where (if any) there's a scene for the music.

i'm flattered to say that they mentioned my town--l.a.
there's a few promoters that have put on broken-beat guys here:

transistor lounge (wed nights @ nacional) www.transistorlounge.com
proper (sun nights @ little temple) http://properla.com
matisse (sat nights @ little temple) http://www.la.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/cgpportal.woa/wa/path?urlpath=%2Fnightlife%2Fbarspubslounges%2Flittletemple%2F8693 (they should have their own site, but i can't seem to find it.)

where's the scene in your-ville?
